When I first set out on a career in art David Smith and Anthony Caro were the main influences. Now, toward the end of a that career, forty years later, I've turned back toward some aspect of figurative art, and the influences, in both painting and sculpture, appear to arrive more from "primitive" art or from artists like Milton Avery, Diebenkorn, and the color field painters. I sometimes can not tell when I begin a painting or sculpture where the door--the empty canvas, the block of wood, the model-- will lead or what kind of journey lies ahead.
